switching distros - cachyos!
hello!
introduction
so i'm getting tired of ubuntu, the new versions are way worse than before, especially snap... and i want to explore new distros.
i decided to start using cachyos after watching a couple of videos.
what is cachyos?
cachyos is, as they say in their website... "a (insert theprimeagen voice) blazingly fast and customizable linux distro"..
in all seriousness, cachyos is a customizable arch based distro, by customizable i mean you can chose from a good amount of preconfigured window managers from their instalation screen. this distros main focus is speed and security, it also uses a heavily optimized kernel using the BORE scheduler.
instalation
i decided to install this on my secondary computer, the chuwi minibook x. i don't use this laptop all of the time, but i do use it everyday to browse the web, read blog posts, and do some simple coding without having any of the distractions i have doing it on my gaming computer.
the instalation was quick and i didn't have to do any extra tweaks to get everything up and running, which is really nice considering the chuwi minibook x has giving me problems in the past getting ubuntu set up, for example: the screen orientation in ubuntu was by default portait left, which is the normal orientation for this laptop, even though i changed it in the setup, it would still popup as portait left and i'd have to change it manually after. in cachyos, i just had to change a couple of things in the settings to do some simple testing on the liveusb version before installing it on the laptop, and when i installed it this change persisted, which was very comfortable.
i didn't have any driver issues when installing, everything is working properly... except for a couple of programs such as OBS, which i still can't get to work, so i'm using kooha instead until i get working on it.
i chose gnome as my wm, i have used i3 and dwm in the past, but i felt like using gnome this time for a change. by default, this came with the gnome-browser and the cachy browser, a fork of librewolf. i don't really like using these types of preinstalled browsers, so i just installed librewolf and i'm using that instead.
using cachyos
so far, everything has been mostly smooth, i have used arch linux before so i know my way around with the terminal, which came preinstalled with the fish shell, something i haven't used before. i am having some problems with fish though.. i cant get nvm to work so installing node is being a bit complicated, and i still haven't gotten the hang of it's configuration.
cachyos did come with zsh preinstalled, so i might switch to that if i can't resolve the problems i'm getting with fish.
apart from this, i'm doing everything i usually do with this laptop without an issue, including writting this blog post :P.
so, i did say everything was pretty smooth... but just when i was going to write this i ran into some problems...
problems with cachyos
just today i was turning my computer on and... suddenly the keyboard and touchpad on my laptop stopped working. this was unusual because i had been using cachyos for a couple of days now and had no problem with this, so i restarted not once, twice, and it started working again but... then i ran into another problem
my wifi card wasn't being recognized, which was really weird since it was ALSO working the other day. so i restarted once again, and everything was back to normal. for now these are the only problems i've had with this distro, and it was all fixed by restarting a couple of times so it isn't that big of a deal.
but... if i have to restart a couple of times every time i want to use my laptop, this is going to be a huge pain in the ass...
conclusions
i'm really liking the experience, it's a very comfortable OS and i can do everything perfectly and smoothly, everything is fast. i will keep using cachyos until i find more problems, hopefully the ones i mentioned above aren't constant :)
